Contemporary Beach House
Sandhills
The Brief
Barc were appointed to design a contemporary beach house overlooking the impressive North Devon coastline, in the place of an existing bungalow. The clients were made up of three generations of one family, they asked us to maximise the stunning views and create a home that met all of their individual needs.
The Work
Barc’s response was to create a beach house that blurs the boundaries between inside and out, with carefully designed glazing ensuring that the clients are connected to the surrounding elements and stunning views across Saunton Sands at every opportunity. Externally, the building nestles into the Saunton hillside and its stepped form and layered use of materials separate it into distinct elements. Sited in a south facing orientation, the home is sustainable with renewable energy technologies integrated throughout. The east west circulation route acts as a gallery space, storage zone and services area. It incorporates elements of delight with secret hideaways, window seats, reading and study areas. Weaving its way through the house, it becomes a vital artery which opens and closes itself to the living quarters and private spaces. The original concept design was undertaken by Jamie Falla and Caroline Shortt whilst part of BAS MOOARC.
